The San Sebastian Festival of Palma de Mallorca

Sebastian was proclaimed patron saint of Palma on the 20th of January, following the miraculous ending to the plague of 1523-1524. On the eve of San Sebastian (last night), concerts taking in various musical styles were held in the squares of the old quarter of the city with bonfires and barbeques; free for people to roast their own sobrassada and botifarrons (sausages).  The final night of the festival, Sunday 22nd of January, is a fiery affair, San Sebastian was said to have beaten the demons and the devils. It is celebrated with a fabulous 25 minute firework display starting at 8pm at Parc de Mar. One to watch out for!

Steak House in Paguera

One of our favourite restaurants in the area is La Hacienda steak house in Paguera, in the south west of the island.  Open for dinner only, the restaurant serves superb food; steak being the speciality!  At all times of the year there is an excellent atmosphere and the ambience is helped with the dozens of candles around the restaurant. Great service with attentive waitresses who speak many languages.  A large salad bar is available for numerous visits and accompanies your main course.    Best to reserve a table at all times as the restaurant is very popular.

Sailing on a Sunday Afternoon in January

Blue skies, sunshine and a light breeze ... these sailors were certainly enjoying a Sunday afternoon out in the Mediterranean, near to the Malgrat Islands.

Sa Rapita beach in the winter time, exhilarating!

Our favourite beach of Sa Rapita, located on the central south coast of the island, is gorgeous even on a windswept January day.  The view greeting you from the restaurant of the Club Nautico Yacht Club is amazing; showing the start of the 1,100 metres of fine white sand. Recommended stop off point.

Believe me it was warm, just very overcast. Rolling waves made an exhilerating walk along the beach.

Palm tree fronds give the beach an (out of season) Caribbean feel.

Cala Figuera, south east coast

Friday 6th of January and the roads around the island are a joy to drive around; the Three Kings celebration is a bank holiday and a family day with the children, so many of the roads were clear.  Warm, but overcast so not great for photos, but ideal time of year to drive around the island to hidden locations.   Cala Figuera is known locally as "Little Venice" and is on the south east of the island approx 60km from Palma.  A very pretty little cala with a surprising number of little cafe bars open considering the special day.

C'an Pastilla, Playa de Palma, Mallorca

Wednesday this week and the clear weather continued ... C'an Pastilla resort just by the Son San Juan airport is one of the first "British" resorts of the 1960's.  The huge sandy beach stretches 6km along Playa de Palma and over to Arenal.   The photos above are taken adjacent to the Club Maritimo San Antonio de la Playa; the Yacht Club.   Boys are on the beach were attempting to "beach surf" with kites and adapted skateboards.  In the (cold) sea were several kite surfers enjoying their sport due to the gusty wind.  

Puerto Adriano

Puerto Adriano today on another superb January day.  The marina continues to take shape with finishing the commercial area for offices, shops, cafes and restaurants. Responsible for the enlargement and refurbishment of the 404 berth marina is the designer Phillipe Starck.  We saw a second cafe has opened, on the upper level, a comfortable location for enjoying a drink and soaking up the winter sunshine. Some large yachts moored in the marina, some over 50 metres. Watch this space for more information on the expansion of Puerto Adriano - an exciting new marina in the south west of the island.  For location on Google Maps click here.

New Year 2012 and the good weather continues

Our wonderful weather continues now into the New Year.  If you are here on the island now and fancy a drive around, do head to the north west coast over to Deia.  The roads are virtually traffic-free and a smattering of restaurants are open even now on January the 2nd. Lunch sitting outside on the balcony of the Trattoria Italiana was wonderful; basking in full sunshine with the spectacular views of the mountains.  Excellent food.  Highly recommended.
